(IRTS or EYE-urts, when spoken as an acronym) – A system developed during the Second Golden Age for larger spacecraft, which can bear the burden of their own Hubspace engines. It allows the ship to crawl along in real-space or anchor itself regardless of nearby gravity wells. The higher the gravity, the more power the system requires, thus landing on the surface or lifting off again will consume most of the reactor’s available energy. It cannot be used for rapid acceleration however, conventional chemical aerospike engines are still suited to that purpose alone.
